The Christmas Tornado!

WTF?

While listening to the radio tonight, the disk jockey was talking about a funny website: Ugly Christmas Trees.com. I went over there and the above picture was the first thing I saw. It's supposed to be an upside down Christmas Tree, but my first thought was, "It's the Christmas Tornado!"

I'm sure this one will be popular in trailer parks everywhere...

Traffic Monstrosity

Spaghetti Junction in Atlanta, GA

Spaghetti Junction on I-85 Heading South

While in the car the other day, I heard a traffic report on the radio advising me of traffic problems on "Spaghetti Junction", which prompted me to do a blog entry about it.

The Tom Moreland Exchange, known colloquially as "Spaghetti Junction" to locals, is what's known as a "stack interchange". It is the intersection of I-85 and I-285, along with several access roads, situated just north of Atlanta, Georgia.

I first encountered Spaghetti Junction in 1985 when I moved to this area from Texas. During that time, construction was ongoing, converting this interchange from a traditional cloverleaf into the fuckup you see today, for the purposes of reducing congestion. The construction continued for several years after that, which made trips into Atlanta a nightmare, especially during rush hour. At that time, I dubbed this area as "The Fuckup" or "The Screwup" (depending on whom I was speaking with), finding the term "Spaghetti Junction" a rather pale description.

It's the type of interchange where one wrong turn will make you end up in New York City with no clear recollection of how you got there. Even worse would be when you'd end up getting stuck in an endless loop going round and round this monstrosity, wondering if you'd have to call someone to bring you some food and gas while you tried to figure out how to finally get free of it. I've even heard urban legends about babies being delivered while making repeated circuits of Spaghetti Junction, while trying to find the off ramp to the hospital. I'd not be surprised if Jimmy Hoffa was even here endlessly circling the various access roads trying to find a way out.

Funny Commercial

I’ve posted about TV commercials that annoy the crap out of me in a few past entries. Today, I thought I’d be different and write about one that is currently my favorite. I could see how people could find this one annoying as well, but there’s something about it that hits my funny bone just the right way and makes me laugh.

This one is the latest in a series of Alltel commercials where Chad the Alltel guy outwits four dweeby, dorky representatives from four other cell phone companies who wear brightly colored polo shirts.. In this most recent commercial, Chad is standing on the sidewalk trying to persuade a family to switch cell phone companies. The four dorks come along and the guy in the yellow shirt, a pudgy, short guy with a Richard Simmons lookalike hairstyle, starts ranting and raving:

So what if I smell like sour cream and failure and my mother is embarrassed by me and tells people I’m part troll!

This commercial is shown about a hundred times a day, but it cracks me up every time. I think the guy who plays the dork in the yellow shirt probably has a brilliant career ahead of him in comedy.

Fat Lip

I’ve read about collagen injections and “lip plumpers”, which are designed to make a woman’s lips bigger. I have to admit I don’t really get the appeal of this; kissing a woman who has done this to herself is kind of a rubbery, blubbery experience.

And when I’m going in for a kiss, I’m not concerned with the appearance of her lips. It’s all about the tongue for me.

Fat Lip

This one looks to me like she went a few rounds in the boxing ring.

Airplane Bird Strike Solution

Bird strikes on airplanes, like the one that downed the US Airways jet on January 15th into the Hudson River, are an increasingly common problem for pilots.

Fortunately, a simple and effective solution has been proposed that causes the birds no harm:

Dissecting 10 Stupid Reasons Against Gay Marriage

I got this one in an email

  1. Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.
  2. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
  3. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.
  4. Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.
  5. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.
  6. Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.
  7. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.
  8. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.
  9. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.
  10. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

Relationship ADD

The other day, I was visiting a lover I don't see all that regularly, and she told me that I have "Relationship ADD", because I flit from relationship to relationship, with little interest in settling down with one woman.

After I finished laughing my ass off, I conceded that she was probably right and that referring to my wandering ways as such was really rather clever.

I thought about it a little, and realized that one of the prime reasons I tend to move on from any particular relationship is boredom; once I've pretty well gotten all the mystery out of a particular relationship and my partner has become fairly predictable, my attention wanders and I lose interest. Rarely do my relationships break up because of anger or hard feelings; they die from lost interest and benign neglect.

And like those with ADD who jump from one thing to another, I've long been happy with having several lovers concurrently; when one gets boring, I go visit another, so I that I don't get terminally bored with any particular one permanently too soon.

Nevertheless, this type of ADD is one that I have no interest in "curing".

Cats Are Democrats, Dogs Are Republicans

Looking at the typical personalities of cats and dogs, I've always thought that cats are Democrats, while dogs are Republicans. I'm not sure whether this also transfers over to pet preferences among Democrats and Republicans -- do Dems prefer cats and Reps prefer dogs, on the whole?

Following is a list of typical traits of the average cat and the average dog that seem to fit my idea:

Cats

Can't be herded, they are natural nonconformists

Are individualists; they follow the beat of their own drummer

Are harmless when left to themselves

Think of their humans as equals

Prefer a clean evironment

Live and let live

Dogs

Are pack animals; they respect authority

Dogs don't think outside the box

When one starts barking, all the others join in.

Worship their humans

Make a mess wherever they go

Nose into everyone's business

Mush Mouth

Lately, while listening to radio and TV, I've heard a lot of poor enunciations. Following are some recent examples I've noted.

  • "Vunnabel" for vulnerable
  • "Ess-spression" for expression
  • "Tearist" for terrorist. I'm guessing that "tearist" is going to be the new "nucular".
  • "Meterologist" for meteorologist. What? Is this someone who studies meters? The sad thing was that the offender on this word was an actual meteorologist.

Feel free to add some mush mouth examples you've heard in the media in the comment box.

Coming Full Circle

The other day, a lover and I were having an odd conversation about the history of women's underwear, when I learned that women didn't wear any sort of bottoms at all until the 19th century. The conversation came about when she groused about a historical novel she'd recently read. The plot took place during the American Revolution and in one chapter the author referred to a female character's bloomers, which my friend said was an anachronism.

I laughed, thinking how much easier it was for men back then to get down to business with a woman -- all he had to do was lift her skirt. And then I had to wonder what women did at certain times of the month if they were freebreezing it all the time.

My third thought was about how now, 200+ years later, we've nearly come full circle. I got the idea that this would make a funny blog entry, so I did a bit of research.

To Illustrate:

1. 1776

2. 1876

3. 1920

4. 1940

5. 1960

6. 1970

7. 1990

8. 2000

9 Some time in the near future

From the commando of the 1770s to the commando of the 21st century, we will have come full circle.

Christmas Lights For Astronauts

The homeowners of the following Christmas displays wanted to make sure the astronauts at the space station wouldn't have to go without seeing Christmas lights this year. Feel free to choose the one you think is most likely to be seen by the orbiting astronauts.

How Many Ways Are You Going to Hell?

How many ways are you going to hell?

The creator of this amusing sign should count himself lucky that being a half-illiterate dumbass with bad grammar and bad spelling is not on the list of sins or he'd be down there right now serving drinks to Adolf Hitler and Joe Stalin.

Personally, I'd send him to hell just for the rampant apostrophe abuse. And what the hell is "fullutent"? Flatulent? If farting will earn you a one way ticket to hell, at least I'll see everyone I ever knew when I get there.

Out of this lists of "sins", the list below shows the ways I'll be going to hell. Feel free to list the ways you'll earn your ride on the handbasket to hell.

Democrat
Environmentalist -- I guess he thinks Jesus wants us to trash the planet
Abortionist -- I've never performed an abortion, but I'm pro choice
Feminist -- I'm not a misogynist, so I must be a feminist
I'm not gay, but I'm pro-same sex rights, so I guess I'm a "homo" enabler
Government Recipient -- I've collected unemployment and tax refund checks before, so I guess I qualify for this
Adulterer
Fornicator
Pervert
Pagan
Agnostic
Liar -- who hasn't ever lied?
Freeloader
Liberal

The maker of this sign obviously has no clue whatsoever of what Jesus is supposed to be all about:

Love Your Neighbor

Let's see your "sins".

Obama Quote of the Day

"My name, Barack, is Swahili. It means 'that one'. And I got my middle name from someone who obviously didn't think I'd ever be running for president."

Said by Barack Obama the other night at the Alfred E. Smith fundraiser dinner. I love it -- It's perfect.

Bitchy Kitty

My female cat is twelve years old now. And the older she gets, the more crotchety she becomes.

She has a bad habit of perching on the narrow ledge of windows in the house; the place where the upper and lower windows meet. She's OK there, as long as she's awake and alert. However, she tends to fall asleep on that narrow ledge, contorted into a weird position. And no sooner than she fully relaxes and drifts off to sleep than she tends to fall from her perch, hitting the floor (or the kitchen counter if she's in that window) with a resounding thump.

You'd think she'd learn and find another place to sleep where she'd be more secure. But that is something you'd be wrong about. No matter how many times she falls out of the window, she goes right back to it, only to fall again a few minutes later. I've done all I can to persuade her to perch elsewhere, but she won't even consider it. If I move her somewhere else, she'll just run right back to the damned window.

The other day she fell out of the window and I suddenly heard her hissing and spitting. I looked to see if the tom was hassling her, but he wasn't even in the room. She's fallen from the kitchen window right into a half eaten borwl of soup I'd left on the counter and she was dripping wet. The bowl was a disposable cardboard bowl, so she'd not hurt herself with glass shards.

She was just royally pissed off at me for leaving the soup there and for getting all wet. When I approached her to make sure she wasn't hurt, she just gave me a look that could kill and hissed emphatically at me. If she could have spoke, she'd have told me to clean up the damned mess, already.

By this time, the tom came into the kitchen to see what the hell was wrong with her and she hissed at him, too, for good measure.

Have any of you ever had your cats to verbally complain at you in this manner before?

Useful Shit

San Antonio, Texas plans to be the first U.S. city to harvest methane gas from human waste on a commercial scale and turn it into clean-burning fuel. The main byproduct of human waste is methane gas, which will soon be converted into natural gas to burn in power plants.

The residents of San Antonion produce about 140,000 tons of shit (more euphemistically known as "biosolids") a year which will convert into enough natural gas to generate about 1.5 million cubic feet per day.

Methane gas, which is a byproduct of human and organic waste, is a principal component of the natural gas used to fuel furnaces, power plants, and other combustion-based generators.

It's just too bad we can't turn our shit into gasoline...

A Lethal Bomb

This past Tuesday, West Viriginia police officer T.E. Parsons brought a suspect to the police station for a breathalyzer test.

During the course of the test, the suspect, Jose Cruz, allegedly farted and made fanning motions, directing the stink toward the officer. Officer Parsons then charged Cruz with battery.

Kanawha County Magistrate Jack Pauley signed a motion to dismiss the charge Thursday.

Better watch out! Those fart blossom mushroom clouds can be deadly!

Voldemort/Umbridge 2008?

A few days ago, I wrote a post comparing Sarah Palin to Peggy Hill. While listening to her acceptance speech at the Republican convention the other night, her tone of voice and simpering little laugh immediately reminded me of another fictional character, one far less benign than Peggy Hill.

Save for the lack of a British accent, Sarah Palin reminded me strongly of Delores Umbridge, the evil witch who takes over Hogwarts in the movie, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix".

It seems as if I wasn't alone making this connection. Someone on Facebook did a comparison of the two women, which I've reproduced below:

The similarities are astounding. Here's a few:
1. Palin has enjoyed a meteoric rise to the center of politics. Umbridge, likewise, came from nowhere to take over Hogwarts.
2. They resemble toads, wear glasses, and have an affinity for all things pink.
3. Both like censorship. Umbridge censored using wands and having fun, and Palin tried to censor certain books in a public library that were against her morals (bizarre because Palin was a communications major -- turncoat!).
4. Both were selected to high posts by really old dudes. Come to think of it, McCain might even be Cornelius Fudge...hmmm...
5. They both have acidic personalities--either agree with them or leave. Umbridge polarized Hogwarts while Palin, upon being elected mayor of tiny Wasilla, Alaska, asked a bunch of her staff to resign if they supported the former mayor.
6. Both ignore obvious problems. Umbridge ignored the constant evidence that Voldemort was returning to power, whereas Palin ignores the fact that her daughter is living proof that abstinence-only education is retarded.
7. Both have a tendency of being wicked with a sunny disposition. Umbridge, among other things, make Harry scar himself with pointless discipline, with a smile, while Palin is willing to send our troops to die for an unjust cause, with a smile (idea compliments of Charles Mitchell).

The list can go on, and I'm sure over time it will. But the fact is that we as a country are seriously considering a Fudge/Umbridge--I mean, McCain/Palin ticket.

Actually, I'd say a Voldemort/Umbridge ticket, if the pictures I posted the other day comparing McCain and Voldemort are any indication.

Separated At Birth?

Lord Voldemort and John McCain. Amazing resemblance, isn't it?
